CAN THE AVERAGE CONSUMER WAIT OUT INFLATION? PROBABLY NOT

Well into the pandemic, an amazing thing happened. Even with all of the shutdowns, because of the federal fiscal aid, people survived, and many increased their savings. (After all, where were they going to spend their money?)

THE FED’S LATEST MEETING MINUTES OFFER DETAILS FOR CRE

The minutes from the Federal Reserve’s June Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting were released on Wednesday with some interesting tidbits for the real estate industry.

DESPITE DECLINES, REITS OUTPERFORMED BROADER MARKETS IN JUNE

REITs outperformed broader markets by nearly 1.3% in June, as the Federal Reserve hiked interest rates by 75 basis points and signaled a more aggressive approach to fighting inflation in the coming months. In June, the FTSE Nareit All Equity REITs index posted a total return of -7.1% while the Equity REITs index was down 7.4%.

MASTERCARD: RETAIL SALES RISE 6.1% IN JUNE AMID RISING PRICES 

In-store spending continued to outpace e-commerce sales year-over-year in June amid ongoing inflation.According to Mastercard SpendingPulse, which measures in-store and online sales across all forms of payment, retail sales excluding auto and gas rose 6.1% year-over-year in June.

FTI CONSULTING: U.S. ONLINE RETAIL SALES TO TOP $1 TRILLION IN 2022

 U.S. e-commerce sales will pass an important milestone this year —thanks to the pandemic. Online retail sales will reach $1.07 trillion in 2022, up 11.7% from last year, according to FTI Consulting’s Retail & Consumer Products practice.
